Different types of facial expressions

Schematically one can distinguish three main types of facial expressions (Fig. 49). In each there is a certain dominant.
Neutral facial expressions. Muscle contraction and thus «expressive» skin folds are absent. Serenity, decisiveness, mild attention.
Expression of positive feelings. Face is flattened as if by centrifugal force. For example, stretch the lips, eyelids are smoothed out, elongated eyebrows. Thus, on the face show through optimism and positive emotions: laughter, smile, delight, joy. It seems that the person is in complete harmony with the surrounding world, he is «open» to him.
Expression of negative feelings. Person «contracts», its features are concentrated, as if under the action of centripetal forces. This is reflected in the lowering of the eyebrows and eyelids, pulling the nose. On the face comes through pessimism and negative: suffering, pain, pity, disgust, sadness, skepticism, threat, anger.

Many experts involved in research in the field of anatomy, ethology and psychology, have attempted to classify the main types of emotions, their characteristics and their manifestation on the human face. The best known is the classification of the Ekman-Friesen (1976-1984 gg.). According to this classification are six basic emotions: pleasure, anger, fear, surprise, disgust and sadness, as well - interest and pain.
The term «main» emotions suggests that they are «birth», «unwitting», characteristic of all people from birth. They appear gradually, as we gain experience of life, literally from the first months of life. For example, to three months on the face of the child to read and resentment, and sadness, and is denoted by a smile. Between three and six months there and expression of anger. Between five and nine months on the childish face can be seen and the expression of fear.
