Chewing gum – a means of improving oral hygiene at the expense of increasing the amount of saliva and rate of salivation, which helps clean surface of the tooth and the neutralization of organic acids produced by bacteria of plaque.

Chewing gum manifests its effects on oral tissues in the following ways:
• increases the rate of salivary secretion;
• stimulates secretion of saliva with a higher buffer capacity;
• helps neutralize plaque acids;
• favors rinsing saliva remote areas of oral cavity;
• Improves the clearance of sucrose from the saliva;
• helps to remove food debris.

In the composition of chewing gum includes: foundation (to bind all the ingredients), sweeteners (sugar, corn syrup or sugar substitutes), perfumes (for good taste and flavor), softeners (for creating an appropriate consistency while chewing).

One of the most important properties of chewing gum is its ability to three-fold, compared with the resting state, increased salivation, while the saliva comes to difficulty and interdental areas.

Currently, the predominant effect of using chewing gum containing sugar substitutes, particularly xylitol, anti caries effect was first shown by the research at the University of Turku, Finland. Xylitol that came with chewing gum remains in the mouth long enough and has a beneficial effect.

It should stay on the opposition to the use of chewing gum, referred to the stomach, lesions mandible joint. If chewing gum used correctly, this pathology does not arise.

In accordance with the results of numerous studies, we can offer the following recommendations for the use of chewing gum:

• chewing gum should be used and children, and adults;
• better use of chewing gum containing no sugar;
• use chewing gum should, if possible, after each meal and sweets;
• avoid undesirable consequences to use chewing gum should be no more than 20 minutes after a meal;
